The following classes are samples of classes we have offered in the past. We release the 2018 Class Schedule and Registration in the Spring.
The Amazing Rainforest | 3.5-5 yrs. old
Imagine walking through a rainforest. Students will transform their classroom by creating a mural that represents the life that exists in the rainforest. Literature, science, art, creating writing, creative thinking, research skills and math will all be utilized in this unit. Let’s uncover the secrets of one of the world’s most fascinating biomes and the animals that call it home.
Wonderment | 6-10 yrs. old
Designed to heighten campers’ sense of wonderment about their world, this class will utilize many curiosity-provoking resources, such as videos, artwork, and books, as our source of exploration. Each camper will create projects based on their individual interests in the topic.
Chess Club | 6+ yrs. old
Let your child be part of a successful chess academy. Chess Wizards is offering specifically designed classes that cater to all levels of chess ability. Each child is challenged by fun games and lessons from real Wizard teachers. It is proven that chess enhances cognitive development in children, improves both verbal and mathematical skills, and increases all levels of academic performance! Playing chess stimulates the mind and helps children strengthen skills such as focusing, visualizing goals, abstract thinking, and forming concrete opinions. Our Academy is so successful because our approach is so unique. Classes and lessons are based on our original, fun, and high-energy Chess Wizards curriculum. Regardless of a child’s ability, Chess Wizards makes chess fun for all!
2D Pixel Art for Video Games | 10+ yrs. old
See your own creations come to life! Have you ever wanted to learn how to create awesome 2D pixel art as you see in Terraria or Pokemon? Now is your chance to learn the basics of this grid-based art form. Campers will design and create their own video game characters and other moving objects (also known as “sprites”). We will discuss color, coding, composition, and basic animation. They will then program a simple video game or animation using Scratch, programming software designed by MIT.
Fiber Fun | 10+ yrs. old
Interested in knitting, crochet, spinning, or sewing? Campers will be introduced to various forms of fiber arts and will choose a project or two to complete during the week. They will take home their creations and the new skills they have learned.
Mindful Theater | 3.5-7 yrs. old
A mix of yoga, dramatic play, singing, and dancing to show tunes. Campers will also create a journal and a craft of their choice to take home.
How Does It Work? | 6+ yrs. old
Take an in-depth look at the science behind everyday machines and cool science in this camp about engineering. We’ll see how your Jr. Mad Scientist brings their inner engineer to life while they construct an amazing kaleidoscope, learn about levers and automatons and create their own contraptions. In the process even become architects by building our own geodesic dome that we’ll even get a chance to climb inside!
Lego Robotics: Junkyard Battle Royale | 6+ yrs. old
Now is the time to explore and battle in uncharted territory. In this class, battle-bots evaluate the potential of a rough and dangerous area before moving in permanently. Experts need you to build a variety of unique robots with an impressive skill set, capable of driving over any junk or obstacle and overcoming any unfamiliar elements or elevation changes in this treacherous junkyard. Use gears, structural integrity, and IR Technology to overcome the unknown. Can your robot not only survive but thrive in the junkyard?
A Picture Paints a 1,000 Words | 6-10 yrs. old
Children naturally connect thoughts, words, and images long before they master the skill of writing. We will be exploring between art and writing in a number of ways. Art projects will be used as a concrete visual resource for campers to reference as they write—through the depiction of colorful scenes, expressive characters, and fascinating ideas. For campers, this art/writing connection is particularly powerful, especially when the artwork is their creation.
Intro Programming Video Games with Scratch | 10+ yrs. old
Have you ever wanted to make your own video game? This crash course in game design and programming is just the thing to get you started. We will be using Scratch, programming software designed by MIT. Its visual presentation allows campers to jump in and get going immediately, all the while gaining a solid understanding of how computer code works.
This session will focus on game design and coding appropriate for beginner and intermediate programmers. By the end of the session, campers will have their own simple, functioning, 2D game that they can share with their friends and family online.
Critter Camp | 3.5-6 yrs. old
Campers will spend the week participating in hands-on, sensory, inquiry-based activities investigating activities all about critters.
Wizardology | 7-9 yrs. old
Learn what came first, Hobbits or Wizards! Read about fairies, brownies and other small magical beings. Create your own villages and shires or any place magic might dwell. Populate your imaginative domiciles with magical creatures. Think about adventures your creatures might seek. Be involved in experiments that solve problems and make life easier. And finally, write either a play to present using your creations or a book to publish.
Get inspired to learn with a group of like-minded campers who want to go further than Harry Potter and write the next great novel or play while building life-like miniature play-scapes to inspire science, math and creative writing. This class is for campers who enjoy math, science, reading, and writing as well as artful creating using crafting materials.
Board Game Theory & Design | 8+ yrs. old
Campers will learn about, play, and create their own board games. This class covers the history of board gaming as well as introduce campers to a wide variety of unique games from around the world. The session will culminate with each campers designing, creating, and sharing their own game.
Board games are a great, fun way to teach probability, game theory, and design. This session will be full of creative thinking and campers-led problem-solving.
Say Hello to Summer | 3.5-6 yrs. old
Children will spend the week participating in hands-on, sensory, inquiry-based activities investigating activities all about Summer.
We will explore water fun, make popsicles, experiment with bubbles, freezing and melting, and much more! We will also investigate the great outdoors including the beach, under the sea and camping.
Espana in Espanol | 5+ yrs. old
Through an immersion experience (only Spanish will be spoken in class), campers will spend five days learning about Spanish food, art, history, daily life, and geography. Campers will also participate in hands-on activities such as cooking a Spanish meal, create art inspired by famous Spanish artists, and create a mock-up of a Spanish city and practice living life in that city.
The Chemistry Mystery | 6+ yrs. old
What’s the mystery all about? Find out in this camp all about cool chemistry. We’ll explore the basics of chemistry with some radical reactions and slippery slime! Want to know who stole the ice cream? Become a detective and use evidence and clues to catch the crook. After we’ve fingerprinted the felon with our own Personal Profiler, we’ll celebrate by making and eating our own ice cream! Crack codes, get crazy with chemistry, and even make your own chocolate candy!
Lego Robotics: Impossible Search & Rescue | 6+ yrs. old
Teams in this class have accepted the challenge to be the first responder in circumstances of extreme weather, danger, abandonment, and quarantine. These victims need robots that can climb ropes to rescue Lego Mini Figure victims, rovers that can drive through and over any obstacle, and so much more. We want to know if your robot can save the day.
Watercolor & Sculpture | 8+ yrs. old
Create beautiful paintings with watercolor and sensational sculptures! For watercolor painting, campers will learn basic wet and dry watercolor techniques, washes, blends, and use of transparency. We will also discuss and implement the fundamentals of color, line, and shape. For sculpture, students will sculpt and assemble their creations using a variety of mediums including clay, assemblage, wood, and model magic. Using an assortment of tools, campers will learn several shaping and molding techniques. We will also paint, glaze, and decorate our work.
After Care: $100/week; 3:30 P.M. to 5:30 P.M.
